5x4 MiniChess is a unique horizontal variant of our compact chess series, offering a different strategic perspective on the classic game. This version features a 5×4 board layout, creating an interesting dynamic where pieces move horizontally across the board.

Game Rules

  • Board Layout: 5×4 board with pieces arranged horizontally
  • Initial Setup:
    • Black pieces at the top (rows 0-1)
    • White pieces at the bottom (rows 3-4)
    • Empty middle row (row 2)
  • Piece Movement:
    • Pawns:
      • White pawns move left (c-1) and capture diagonally left
      • Black pawns move right (c+1) and capture diagonally right
      • No initial two-square move
    • Rooks: Move horizontally or vertically any number of squares
    • Knights: Move in L-shape (2 squares in one direction, 1 square perpendicular)
    • Bishops: Move diagonally any number of squares
    • Kings: Move one square in any direction
  • Game Rules:
    • No castling
    • No en passant
    • No forced check resolution
    • Game ends when a king is captured
    • 20-move limit for each game
  • Winning Conditions:
    • Checkmate: Capture the opponent's king
    • Have more material after 20 moves
